Who are we?

The NATO Surveillance Committee was established in January 2000 in Brussels, in the wake of the bombings of Yugoslavia and NATO’s first eastward expansion to include Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary—a move that cast aside the promises made to Gorbachev and the illusions held by many regarding his famous “common home” and a Europe of peace.

We call on progressive political organizations and the peace movement to question Belgium’s membership in the Atlantic Alliance.

Belgium in the heart of NATO

The small country of Belgium is the seat of two key decision-making centers of NATO: SHAPE, near Mons, and the NATO headquarters in Brussels.

SHAPE is the center of the military command of NATO across Europe where  military plans are designed and implemented regarding nuclear weapons and bases, including the Kleine Brogel base, in the north of Belgium.

Political decisions are taken at the Brussels headquarters of the North Atlantic Council. The Council oversees NATO political and military processes related to security issues.

Brussels is also headquarters of the European Union, which is very close to NATO in geopolitical orientation and policy.

The Kosovo trigger

The Nato Surveillance Committee was born in 1999, in the aftermath of NATO's war against the former Yugoslavia. This aggression brutally demonstrated that the mission of the Atlantic Alliance is not territorial defense of its members, as we were religiously taught, but preservation of Western hegemony.

Then came the invasion and the 20-year occupation of Afghanistan and the participation in the US occupation of Irak. In 2011 Libya, the most developed country in Africa, was completely devastated by NATO bombs, paving the way for jihadists to spread throughout the region and for waves of migrants to attempt deadly Mediterranean Sea crossings  into Europe.

Nuclear madness

In 2002, the USA unilaterally withdrew from the ABM Treaty, which restricts the development of anti-missile missiles. This withdrawal paved the way for NATO's "antimissile shield" project. The term "shield" conceals the fact that the protected party would have the capacity to annihilate the other without fear of retaliation.

Since the 2000s, the new NATO countries have been hosting elements of the US missile defense system. In 2016, construction began on the Polish part, which will house dual-use launchers that deliver both defensive and offensive missiles. In 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

From 2021, the tactical nuclear weapons stockpiled by NATO's European allies are being replaced by ‘Improved’ versions, reputed to be more likely to be used. At the same time, the Allies are in the process of acquiring ruinously expensive F-35 bombers, designed specifically to  carry these 'improved’ bombs.

Under NATO leadership, we are heading madly towards a nuclear holocaust .

The Ukrainian trap

NATO, which was not supposed to extend "one inch to the East", has grown from 16 to 32 members since the collapse of the USSR, and the dismantling of the Warsaw Pact.

The residual Russia had stoically borne witness to this progression and its gradual encirclement by the most powerful military alliance of all time, that in 1949 had been explicitly created against it.

NATO has disdainfully rejected all warnings and requests from Russia to not incorporate  Ukraine into it and to deploy only 500 km from Moscow. On the contrary, in 2014, the US, the UE and NATO’s countries supported the overthrow of the legitimate government in Ukraine, by a part of the country hostile to Russia, with the help of far-right paramilitaries. In spite of ongoing civil war, NATO invested massively in the country, preparing it for membership.

Real peace in the world can only be built on the principle of mutual security for all, not on perpetuation of dominance by one part of the world over another. The very future of humanity depends on it.
