A double-page spread in the March 20 issue of the Swedish weekly Proletären (Communist) develops and analyzes the campaigns and resistance in Ireland surrounding the hypothetical accession of the Republic - home of Joyce and Yeats - to NATO.

This will be no easy task, as a recent poll showed that only 17% of those polled were in favor of joining the Atlantic Alliance, compared with 31% in the British-occupied north. This is never the less true given that the Republic of Ireland is part of that valiant squad of nations that profess neutrality in Europe. It is also true of Serbia, Switzerland and Austria. Belgium was neutral in 1831, but lost its constitutional "permanent neutrality" with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. For pacifists of all countries and philosophical persuasions, this is a banner to wave: Peace and Neutrality, here and now!
